FORD HAS TODAY announced its diesel-powered 2010 Ford Fiesta ECOnetic, Australia's most fuel efficient car.

With an official fuel economy rating of 3.7 l/100km, the Fiesta ECOnetic has the most miserly thirst of any production car available in Australia, pipping the third-generation Toyota Prius and the MINI Cooper D by a mere 0.2 l/100km.

While the Prius betters the Fiesta ECOnetic's 98g/km carbon emissions rating with its own 89g/km rating, the ECOnetic tops the list for conventional internal combustion engined cars - besting the MINI Cooper D's 104g/km.

The Fiesta ECOnetic is powered by a 1.6 litre TDCi common rail diesel engine, specially calibrated for maximum fuel efficiency and featuring a coated Diesel Particulate Filter to keep emissions low.

The ECOnetic 'package' features a range of specially-selected components to achieve its ultra-low fuel consumption, including:

  • Low rolling resistance tyres
  • Unique transmission and final drive ratios
  • Lowered ride height, air deflectors and unique wheel covers for improved aerodynamics
  • Weight reduction through the provision of a tyre mobility kit in lieu of a traditional spare wheel/tyre
  • Addition of a green shift indicator light in the instrument cluster, which signals the optimal point to change gear to maximise fuel economy

"The challenge for our engineering team in developing the ECOnetic vehicle line was to deliver the maximum reduction in fuel economy and CO2 emissions using available and affordable technologies," Ford Australia boss Marin Burela said at the launch of Fiesta ECOnetic today.

Mr Burela described the Fiesta ECOnetic as a balance of affordability, style and technology.

"It brings together a whole range of clever thinking and technologies that are available right now, creating a 'greener' vehicle that delivers economy without compromise and genuine savings against the fuel cost of daily driving," Mr Burela said.

As with its regular Fiesta stablemates, the Fiesta ECOnetic gets a 5-Star ANCAP crash safety rating, offering driver and front passenger airbags, head and thorax front side-airbags and a driver's knee-airbag as standard equipment.

Anti-lock Braking, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control and Emergency Brake Assist are also standard.

The Fiesta ECOnetic goes on sale in Australia from December 1, with a recommended driveaway price of $24,990 ($8760 less than the Cooper D and $14910 less than the Prius, both before on-road costs).
