OVER TEN YEARS OLD and one of the earlier examples of retro-inspired styling in a new car, the ‘New’ Beetle badge is quickly reaching a crossroads: retirement, or rebirth (again).
Speaking with press at a Volkswagen event in Germany this week, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby confirmed that a new New Beetle will arrive in 2012.

Mr Jacoby said the goal for the next Beetle is to make it “more of a halo car” for the brand, focusing on higher quality trims and a more upmarket appeal.
“There is a great opportunity with the Beetle and the emotional fabric it has to offer,” he said.
Building on feedback from owners of the current New Beetle, Mr Jacoby said that more interior space and greater rear legroom will be a priority.
The Beetle’s design chief, Walter de’Silva described the design of the next-generation model as “a big step”.
