FIVE POINT Safety Check figures released by the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) this week show that as many as 28 percent of cars on Victoria’s roads may be unsafe.
This year between January 1 to September 30, participating repairers tested 3171 vehicles against VACC’s Five Point Safety Check of critical safety features. A total of 905 vehicles failed the inspection of brakes, tyres, lights, steering and restraints.

Conducted free when vehicles are serviced at participating repairers, an alarming 25 percent of the vehicles tested had unsafe tyres.
“VACC believes not enough attention is paid to vehicle safety,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase said.
“Motorists, agencies and Governments need to wake up to the fact that too many people are driving too many unsafe vehicles on our roads.”
Mr Purchase said that while other road and driver safety campaigns have been commendable, the government needs to take action on vehicle maintenance before the number of unsafe vehicles on the road climbs to one-in-three.
“Governments and their instrumentalities need to recognise that this evidence is overwhelming. The data is real time data and it deserves real time action,” Mr Purchase said.
“If something is not done soon the number of unsafe vehicles on our roads will be one-in-three.”

I’m not in Victoria, so…. do you have to have regular inspections like NSW? In QLD you don’t and I bet the same would be the result here as so many shitters roam the street. Not to say NSW has none, but honest inspections that are audited annually could certainly make more cars & trucks & bikes safe. Be interested to know…
It would be nice if governments looked at facts like these rather then just lowering speed limits and putting in speed cameras.
Note that this comes just as VicRoads have declaired that they’re going to reduce the road toal even furthur by INCREACING PEANALTIES!!!!
Honestly, just require poliece to to a qucik walk around inspection of the tyres on all vehicles that are stopped for any reason. If they’re unsafe, give the owner two or three weeks to present the car to a police station with satisfactory tyres or give them a large fine to the tune of $5000.
That alone should have a significant impact on the road toal.
its the shite roads destroying cars..
rajman - in Victoria, a car only needs to pass a roadworthy inspection when its being sold. There’s no equivalent to NSW’s annual “pink slip” check.
It’s more than shite roads destroying the cars. Most people treat their cars with disinterest. As long as it goes, that’s all they care about. Cars need servicing, and neglect makes them un-roadworthy just as much as our bumpy roads.
