THE PINT-SIZED Suzuki Alto, powered by a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine, will play 'David' to an army of Goliaths in this year's Global Green Car Challenge.

Suzuki expects the Alto, which returns a fuel economy rating of 4.8 l/100km, to perform even better on the open roads after recent international economy runs showed results lower than 3.0 l/100km.

Competing against the likes of Holden's big Sportwagon and the Skoda Superb, Suzuki will partner with Kangan Batman TAFE College for the event.

The little Alto will be prepared by the college's automotive engineering students, who will also provide back-up support during the event.

“The Alto is Suzuki’s definitive low emissions car, and the Global Green Challenge represents an excellent opportunity to showcase the car’s outstanding fuel efficiency,” Suzuki Australia General Manager Tony Devers said.

The Global Green Car Challenge begins in Darwin on October 24, passing through Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy and Port Augusta, finishing in Adelaide on October 30.

Elsewhere, Suzuki has announced it will reveal a redesigned 2010 Suzuki Alto at next month’s Tokyo Motor Show, despite the current model being only a year old.

An evolution of the current design, Suzuki said that the Alto on display will be a near-production model.
