TOYOTA AUSTRALIA has this week revealed a sneak peak at the interior of the upcoming Hybrid Camry, offering a glimpse of the hybrid’s unique instrument cluster.
Set to be the first hybrid car to be built in Australia, full-scale production is scheduled to begin in December. Pre-production is already underway, with a small number of Hybrid Camrys rolling off the production line to test assembly processes.
The new photo, revealing an instrument cluster virtually identical to that of the US-market hybrid Camry, shows a Hybrid Synergy Drive display panel and a cool blue hue to the dials.
A luminous green “ready” light indicates that the electric motor is on, but the petrol engine is off. To the left of the speedometer resides a prominent economy meter, which displays instant fuel consumption in litres per 100km.
Like the Prius, the Hybrid Camry has been developed to run on either electric power alone, petrol alone, or in a combined mode.
Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said Hybrid Synergy Drive will take Camry’s efficiency to a new level.
“Hybrid Camry will have substantially more power than the petrol-only car while using at least 20 per cent less fuel,” Mr Buttner said.
“It will save motorists hundreds of dollars a year in fuel - and the more you drive, the more you’ll save on fuel.”

THE biggest piss-off with this is that it’s MY money [taxes] that GovCo have used and donated to BigT[tm.F-0] so that they can develop this hybrid, i would have rather my 10’s of millions be spent on road upgrades, schools, hospitals, if BIGT can spend $500million a year on F1 they can finance this con themselves…
Lets see now, [gut feeling] +$4k extra to save perhaps 3L of ULP per 100km.Both these in my opinion are BEST case senarios, it will most likely cost more, and save less?
Average punter [15,000km p/a] is going to save $450 a year, wow do the math, what a HUGE saving….NOT!
Now if Toyota was SERIOUS about really saving the enviro and also consumers money for HALF [1/2] what the hybrid pack would cost, say $2k, they could have fitted a injected LPG system
Over 15,000km a 4cyl camry on ULP would use 1500L of ULP @ $1.20 = $1800 [$1350 FOR HYBRID]
Over 15,000km a 4cyl camry on LPG would use 1800L of LPG @
$0.50 = $900
LPG is 30%+ cleaner and greener!
Once again LPG wins, and by MILES…..
DID BIGT OR ANY OTHER STUPID GOVCO EVER SIT DOWN AND DO THE SIMPLE MATH?
Cheers
F-0
PS The above figures are based on real-world FACT!
Could the Camry get any more boring
You are spot on F-0.
If they can spend all that money on racing then why the hell is the government giving them some of my tax dollars?
Ahh but if it was LPG then they could use “hybrid” in their marketing to play on the smug factor lol. Always reminds me of the episode in South Park when the cloud of smug rises from people driving hybrids… lmao
