A PROTOTYPE BMW X5 has been spied undergoing testing in Europe, its mildly-camouflaged bumpers and lamp clusters hinting at the popular SUV’s new look for 2010.

Larger chin intakes and a reshaped central intake are the main changes to the front bumper, while the rear bumper has been re-shaped to accommodate a pair of rhomboid tailpipes.

Although the general shape of the front and rear light clusters appears largely unchanged, new lenses and ‘jewelery’ will freshen up the X5’s appearance.

New alloy wheel designs are also likely.

Inside, besides a refreshed interior, the new model will certainly feature BMW’s revised iDrive controller.

Much of the X5’s current engine line-up is expected to carry over, but the 300kW twin-turbocharged 4.4 litre V8 from the BMW X6 xDrive50i may be added to the X5 range in some markets.

The facelifted 2010 BMW X5 is anticipated to make its debut at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show in January. Timing for a local release has yet to be determined

This is wrong. The 2010 model year will NOT have the facelift. The facelift will be on the 2011 model. Everyone, except this site, knows this.

Fordguy, if the facelift launches early next year and gos on sale soon after, that makes it a 2010 model, no? The 2011 model year doesnt start until august-september 2010.

By the way, this isn’t the only site I’ve seen report this as a 2010 model. You mustn’t look at a lot of websites.

The facelift will be a 2011 model year update which will be launched eary in March 2010.

The facelift will be on the 2011 model, which will be launched in March, 2010 as an early 2011 launch.

And it WILL be a model year 2011, not 2010, as define by BMW, the EPA, NHTSA, and every states DMV on the vehicle title.

Ok, is that why they are still giving the $4500 eco discount on 2010″s? I’m doubting that will be avail on the refreshed 2011s that will be in out in March. Also, is it true the refresh on the X5d will have 306 HP, up 40, as well as new wheels and updated interior? If so, I may as well wait six months b4 plunking down my $60k, much rather have the refresh, plus put off spending crazy money, could always buy the redesigned 2010 4runner for $40k!

Does it make sense to have a 2010 Model year with a October build date and then 6 months later have 2011 Model Year. I’ve never heard of this before. But I agree with the poster…why by the “stale” model when you can wait a few months an by the newer model. The eco credit could continue on the diesel since the X5 design was NOT the reason they offered the eco credit. It was because the diesels WERE NOT SELLING. The new face is not going to suddenly have diesel engine buyers coming out of the woodwork.

  • I would choose a hybrid over an all-electric car; (14.0%)
  • I don't know enough about their range and performance to have a view; (10.0%)
  • Because of the environmental benefits, I would be prepared to pay a premium for an electric car; (9.0%)
