FOLLOWING NEWS IN MAY that Victoria Police has begun trialling a new type of camera capable of scanning the number plates of up to 700 passing vehicles an hour, South Australia’s police force has this week launched its own trial of the technology.
Called Mobile Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, the new systems will be trialled in four South Australia Police patrol cars until the end of the year, before a decision is made on whether to expand the programme.
Each patrol car is fitted with three ANPR cameras: two forward-facing and a third with with the ability to scan the registration plates of parked vehicles as the patrol car passes.
“It increases the potential for offenders to be identified, stopped and appropriate policing responses undertaken,” a SA Police release reads.
“Intelligence, particularly relating to vehicle location, can link criminals to these vehicles as well as linking vehicles to crime scenes. ANPR will also identify unroadworthy (vehicles).”
Assistant Commissioner Killmier pointed to the technology’s successful use interstate and overseas as evidence of the trial’s worth. He said the cameras will be used in crime reduction and road safety strategies this year.
“As a vehicle licence plate is read by the camera, the image is displayed on an LCD screen visible to police officers and an audible tone alerts police if a registration number plate matches a vehicle of interest,” Assistant Commissioner Killmier said.
“ANPR cameras record the location of a vehicle at an exact time, have a capacity to scan a high volume of vehicle plates, and work in all weather and lighting conditions.
“We hope they will help police intercept dangerous drivers and therefore assist in reducing deaths and serious injury.”

Good news except false number plates will be used as well as other cars of a different registered owner will trick the system .Why not check stops ?I have nothing to fear from a check of my license and registration .Example a drunk or unlicensed offender might borrow his wife’s car but a stop check will sort this out .

Great news if it helps save one life or prevent one serious crime.
I don’t mind being checked ,licence rego and such ,but I object to the cap over the eyes and the aggression bit .As for questions on where I am going what I am doing its no bodies business but mine provided I am behaving .I think Police play too many thug tactics it just doesn’t work with me .I am not scared of criminal in uniform .

Unfortunately the low life criminals drunks and road killers will employ these tactics .I am 100 % behind what the police will be doing its a great idea .I am not a VICTIM either as I have never had a point in millions of klm driving taxis both here and in Tasmania over 25 years .But even now I still carry a voice activated tape in case of a try on .I won the first case against a policeman misusing a radar camera and it was Police in Dawson street Brunswick who helped me to win they knew he was dishonest .I too am respectful and expect to be treated the same. By the way I drive a Volvo turbo I believe in safety and yes I wear a hat .Please read what I said again Charlie.

My car was stolen from the caravan park on port wakefield rd
on sep 29 2009. In no other state can you steal a car.. and have it passed by your RTA. They don’t do vehicle checks.. WTF??

FIND MY CAR WITH YOUR CAMERAS! DO ANNUAL VEHICLE CHECKS.. GET TOUGH ON CHECKING VEHICLES PRE 2000!! SA needs to do something about this.. it’s primitive!

Technically even with your wonderful cameras.. you can’t detect that the vehicle is stolen unless you pull it over and check it.
Makes sense to do annual checks doen’t it??? If I catch these people.. I’m gonna skin them. REGO VL 50 SS.. please help
