2011 Peugeot 408 Spied Testing In Heavy Camouflage

PHOTOS HAVE SURFACED this week of a test car believed to be the upcoming 2011 Peugeot 408, successor to the current-generation 407 sedan and coupe.

Little can be seen of the 408's finer design elements, but reports online suggest that it will represent more of an evolutionary step for the badge rather than a complete styling overhaul - as with the leap from the 406 to the 407.

Beneath the heavy black cloak is believed to be an all-new chassis, shared with the Citroen C5 (pictured above), making it slightly larger than the outgoing 407.

A range of diesel and petrol engines are expected to power the 408, along with a diesel-hybrid powertrain delivering emissions figures of under 100g/km.

In Australia, the current generation 407 is offered with 2.0 litre and 2.7 litre petrol engines, developing 100 and 150kW respectively.

In Europe, the 408 will take the fight to the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia and the Ford Mondeo, while its more upmarket positioning in Australia will see it take on the likes of the Volkswagen Passat and Renault Laguna.

Haha, looks like it was spotted testing in Scotland with that rain jacket on it!
