WE MAY NEVER see the sporty Volkswagen Scirocco in Australian showrooms, but local fans can take some consolation in the release this week of a new iPhone game dedicated to the Scirocco R.

Following the successful launch of the Volkswagen Polo Challenge for the iPhone back in April, the Scirocco R 24 Hour Challenge allows gamers to hurl the most powerful Scirocco through a virtual course modelled on the famous Nurburgring.

Three different play modes - Qualifying, 24 Hour and Bluetooth-supported Multiplayer mode - give fans a variety of ways to experience the virtual version of the Scirocco R.

As with the Polo game, the Scirocco R 24 Hour Challenge can be controlled by either on-screen controls, or by using the iPhone’s in-built accelerometer to steer by tilting the device left to right.

The real-world Scirocco R, along with the new Golf R (which we likely will see in Australia), is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder, developing 195kW and 350Nm of torque.

Hmm. If this uses the physics engine of “Real Racing” for the iPhone then it could actually be quite good fun.

I got bored of it before completing a lap. Need to be able to change the camera angle and the controls aren’t the best. But hey it’s free.
