PERHAPS ONE of the most hotly anticipated debuts this year, technical details and images for the 2010 Volkswagen Golf R were revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week.
Today, Volkswagen has released new promotional footage featuring the aggressively styled Golf R driving alongside its even more dramatic-looking sibling the Scirocco R.
Successor to the R32 - a line that started with the menacing Golf IV version and ended with the luxuriously appointed but enjoyable Golf V R32 - the Golf R represents a new approach to range-topping performance models at Volkswagen.
Power has been increased over the 184kW V6 that powered the R32; its turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine developing 199kW and 350Nm of torque.
With help from the fourth-generation Haldex all-wheel-drive system, Volkswagen says the Golf R will reach 100km/h in 5.7 seconds with the six-speed manual and 5.5 seconds when equipped with VW’s DSG transmission.
Fuel consumption is rated at just 8.5 l/100km - a 2.2 l/100km improvement over the outgoing R32.
The Golf R’s most obvious styling update comes in the form of a more aggressive bumper with daytime running lights, joined by 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and an ‘R-emblazoned’ piano black grille.
LED tail-lights, also updated from the Golf and GTI, sit above R32-inspired centre-mounted twin exhaust pipes protruding from the largely-unchanged rear bumper.
No pricing or launch details have been announced, but more information is expected over coming weeks.

I wish they would launch the Scirocco here.
Not bad looking car…performance seems fantastic on paper but I still feel the MKVI looks alot weaker than the MKV
I looked at the pics and thought I was on redtube as I have half a chubby, absolutely brilliant looking car, I’m in!!
About time Volkswagen!
+1 to Steven’s comment as well.
Go VW!! Glad to see they are doing this properly as an all wheel drive! Times would be same as Audi s3 if weight is similar?
Like an S3, looks like a p-plater-price $40k GTi + extra bits but looks quality this time around, with somewhere between Pirelli $50k and S3 $66k money and ’similar’ quality level of interior of Luxo Audi with a VW badge instead of audi?
Anyone guessing RRP in Melbourne yet? I estimate A$58k plus onroads, or roughly an S3 on sale for those that cannot do maths (LOL)!
Looks great and the turbo four cylinder is certainly not short on power! But the exhaust note of the Golf V R32 will be hard to beat.
Agree with others. I’m sure it will be a good car but I’d rather see VW Australia bring in a hi-po Scirocco. They’d get my order.
hard to believe this would be a whole 1sec faster 0-100km/h than the Scirocco with only 4kW more. according to your article on the scirocco, it takes 6.5sec, but this does it in 5.5
To be honest, I’d save $15,000 and take the 5 door GTi instead.
It will be faster because it’s AWD the Scirocco and Scirocco R are both FWD. With AWD on standaing starts there is little to no wheels spin. Roll-on would be a different storry where a FWD with less weight and similar power should have the edge.
I really hope they keep the price down on this and don’t go pricing out of the market. The S3 is a rippoff. I don’t care how good the quality is, at the end of the day it’s still only a hot hatch.
If they can keep the RRP at $56K and under for the 5 door with DSG they will sell as many as they can get over here no doubt.
Also this new Golf R has a different AWD system to the Haldex as on the previous R32 and current S3. The new system is much more proactive rather than reactive which should elliminate alot of the understeer problems of these type of cars. The new system now doesnt wait for the front wheels to loose traction before it engages tourque to the rear. Alot of R32 and S3 owners think they are driving around with proper AWD but they’re not. They are FWD untill wheel spin is ditected then power is sent to the rear. Glad to see VW finally adressing this.
Love the styling. The only criticism I have is the rear diffuser area. Firstly it should be in a matt black finish not gloss black. Also the twin outlets look less integrated as part of the car as the previous R32’s twin outlets did. I think this is because the outlets need to be raised a little higher so they look more integrated with the rear bar.
Other than that the new styling is more sharp, sleek and aggressive over the previous bubble “pregnant” R32 look. I think they got this new Golf R styling pretty close to spot on.
The Golf R should be a cracker of a drive.
i reckon the r32 looked much more aggressive but the scirocco looks better than both. I dont like the front of the new .:R. The sound of the r32 is gone but i guess moddability has improved.
I thought about waiting around for the R20 to come around but i didnt like the new GTi’s styling and i figured the R20 would be similar and the speed will only be slightly quicker than the r32 but i know the sound would definately not be there so i bought a new r32.But i would rather keep my R32 for the time being.
Let’s just hope they come up with some interior colour options other than black (or grey). For me, being stuck with either of those colours would be a deal breaker. Otherwise, I plan on having one of these new Rs to park alongside my Mk V.
