LAST MONTH, Toyota unveiled the 2010 Landcruiser Prado, dropping the covers with simultaneous reveals in Japan and at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Toyota has kept details of the Prado’s off-road equipment and technology under its hat in the weeks since, but today the world ‘number one’ has released new information.
Promising improved driving dynamics both off and on-road, the new Prado is marginally bigger, more aerodynamic and more powerful than the model it replaces.
Toyota has enhanced the Prado’s 4.0 litre V6 with the addition of its VVT-i variable valve timing system on both inlet and exhaust cams, bumping power output up by more than 10 percent. Torque is up, while fuel economy and emissions performance are also improved.
In addition, the Prado’s 3.0 litre turbodiesel powerplant has undergone some subtle refinements for 2010, boasting a combined fuel economy figure under 9.0 l/100km.
The body is now 80mm longer, 10mm wider and 15mm lower. The lower ride height, in conjunction with a host of aerodynamic undertrays, helps reduce the Prado’s drag coefficient from 0.37 to 0.35.
Body styling is heavily revised. The 2010 Prado features a new grille, new bumpers, new light clusters and new sheetmetal all around.
LED taillights are now a standard feature of the Prado, as are wing mirror-mounted LED indicators.
Suspension tunes have been revised for 2010 with claimed improvements in handling, stability and ride comfort, utilising a new Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that automatically adjusts the front and rear anti-roll bars.
Designed for comfort on and off the road, KDSS provides enhanced stability during on-road driving while allowing longer suspension travel for tackling off-road trips.
The new Prado is fitted with Toyota’s CRAWL system, now a standard feature on the larger LandCruiser 200 Series.
Designed to assist drivers navigate tricky terrain, CRAWL is a ‘feet-off’ control system that operates in low-range and replaces Downhill Assist Control.
The system has been designed to minimise wheel spin and lock on rocky and sandy tracks, also making itself useful in escaping mud traps.

Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) is a brand new feature by Toyota, working as an off-road version of the condition settings available with many new high-end sportscars.
Incorporating Multi-Terrain ABS, the system offers a wide range of slip control, providing maximum traction for situations involving mud and sand, loose rocks, moguls and rocks.
Joining the MTS system, the Multi-Terrain Monitor displays images from all sides of the vehicle on the Prado’s in-dash display.
Downhill Assist Control maintains speed and stability when descending slopes, and Hill-start Assist Control minimises roll-back when beginning an ascent up a steep incline.

Similar again to features available in newer sportscars, Toyota’s Adaptive Variable Suspension lets the driver specify ride characteristics via three pre-tuned damper settings.
Seven airbags, stability control and traction control are to be offered as standard across the 2010 Prado range, however precise Australian specifications have yet to be revealed.
The 2010 Toyota Landcruiser Prado is slated to go on sale in November of this year, with pricing details to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The 2010 Prado, now with added ugly. Seriously everytime Toyota updates their 4WD’s they get bigger. How many do you need, you have the Landcruiser 200 series, the 110 series, the 70 series, Prado, Kluger and RAV4. I thought the Prado was supposed to be a mini-200 series, ie capable offroad, but by dropping the ride height and making it bigger, they are re-aiming it back to being a softroader, which is what the Kluger is!
As Tom said the Prado is meant to be an off-road medium-sized SUV, like Nissan’s Pathfinder. The Kluger is a “soft-roader” medium-sized SUV and can be had with 2WD only.
This is also reflected in the 2 cars’ spec / equipment packs with the Prado being more utility / off-road focused with DAT stuff like hill descent control while the Kluger’s features are more family oriented such as DVD screens and auto-closing tailgates etc.
You’re right that they do keep getting bigger though, but that’s just like every other manufacturer’s cars.
With the advent and inevitable success of cars like the BMW X1 mini SUVs, and the RAV4 no longer being a “baby 4WD” Toyota and other manufacturers will probably release something akin to the original RAV’s size in the near future as well to cater to that market.
Yeah, like the others said, the Kluger is a softroader, while the Landcruiser 120 (Prado) is a offroad capable Medium Size 4wd Wagon.
Godspeed, Toyota have urban cruiser in other markets which is even smaller then the RAV4.

Yeah, looks very plastic, like most new cars, it doesnt look that much uglier to the old prado. I hope they make a MANUAL FOR ALL VARIANTS. not all of us want the car to drive us…. some of us want to drive the car!! Wake up Toyota.

Anyone notice how ‘korean’ it looks? It’s almost as if the japanese are lowering their standards to compete, yet the Korean’s are raising theirs with European styling and so on. Anyone old enough would remember when the japanese first introduced cars in Oz, no-one would touch them. Then the korean’s had the same effect, now Hyundai’s a growing brand and we think the japanese cars are getting ‘uglier’. Hmmm interesting.

Another strong vote for “ugly”. Two, in fact. Every time I see a 200 series ‘Cruiser on the road, I vomit in my mouth a little bit. The bubbly headlights, the Tonka-toy wheel arch bulges, the angular rear-end. The ugliness knows no bounds. Soon they’ll be taking notes from Ssangyong….

Seriously hope that the 2010 Prado has not compromised the touring range by putting in a floor folding third row of seats. Also happy to see that the spare has not been slung inder the tail - for the same reason.
Anybody using a Prado for its intended purpose of long range remote bush touring will have range high on their selection criteria list (as I do). Congrats on getting the towing weight up to 3 t.
Are there any details of power & torque outputs for the D4D engine yet?? Current D4D is a bloody beauty. Just back from a 10,000km bush trek towing a 7 m caravan and produced a trip average of 15.44 L/100km

It has a 150 litre fuel tank, and tyre size will be the same. the 3 doors drop the sub tank.

Although Prado is a well-established brand name in Gulf region with very good resale value, but Toyota is getting it uglier and uglier! which makes me hesitating to get one.

i spoke to a toyota rep yesterday , he basically said the $$$ will be $5000 - $6000 more on top of what they are priced at now, i asked another dealership and he said the same, also better fuel economy for the diesel, but he said the petrol was up to 200kw, i wasn’t sure about that he said it would run around town @17/L, but thats all heresay, but pricing is pretty spot on
i’ll bet they still sell like hotcakes despite how ugly people are saying it is. The urban cowboys don’t care, mums don’t care - in fact the more truck like the better cred parked at the school gates.
Why do Toyota insist on making every new model larger. I currently drive a first series Kluger. Size is perfect for me. I am ready to trade but will not be looking at the new Kluger. Toyota is gradually losing my business.
This new Prado is so ugly that surely even the yummy mummies will have to think again. It looks like a camry body stretched over an elephant.
Recommended retail price for the Grande is $92,450. The Kakado will be a limited edition and does not have as many features as the Grande and it will retail for $86,230. Yes, a bit ugly but I am still going to buy a Grande to replace my lovely ten year old Prado.
Now all Toyota needs in Australia is the actual Urban Cruiser!

Just how does a car company extracate those “brand tragics” out of their perfectly adequate 3 year old rigs? and what of the prancers prowling the school pickup?
Simple, make the car bigger..bigger is better right? No.. Its ruined the essence of so many cars the 3 series BM, Mazda 6, Mini, Falcon & Commodore have grown so large their buyers are forced to downsize. I could go on.
Whilst its true manufacturers tend to fill the gaps by slotting in smaller models generally those models lack the features that made the original segment fillers (say for instance a transfer case) popular and because of it turn a better profit.
While I can appreciate the market dictates which Prado version we receive here in Australia e.g. long range tank, wheel remaining on the back tailgate. Why is it not possible to offer your other version as an option and thereby broadening your market: afterall you are producing the vehicle for other overseas markets e.g. wheel underneath, glass lifting in tailgate , smaller tank. This was the version I was hoping to purchase.
The reason why it’s not possible to have the overseas version is because the main purpose of the Prado is towing. Without the long range fuel tank and the full size wheel on the tailgate the 5 door could only tow 2000kg. So if your happy with that towing capacity and you want a lift up tailgate and not a large fuel tank your a Kluger buyer. Regards

both the bmw x5 and the merc ml 320cdi are 3 ltr vehicles of similar weight; both with smaller tanks and spare wheel underneath. one has 2.7 and the 3.5 ton towing. It surprises me to hear the overseas model is rated so low. Having previously owned a prado 3 years ago I had been impressed with it and looked forward to what I saw of the 2010 model from japan on the net. I think now I will purchase another ml.
I have a 2007 GX Diesel Prado with the options pack, and have no issues with performance or fuel consumption. On what I have seen and read of the 2010 model nothing there persuades me to upgrade.
For a family of three growing kids at holiday/travel time and to and from school and different sports, a Kluger is too small, a Land Cruiser is too big but the Prado is just right. By the specs of this new Prado, it sounds perfect.
We have and love a 2006 GXL Diesel and were going to up date and were told wait the new model is comming and will be better ETC ETC when we saw the new model and the specks we tried to source a 2009 only to be told there has been an unexpcted run on them and is dam near impossible to get one . the run on them came on about the time Toyota released the pics of the new one What is that telling you Toyota !!

anybody know or heard of the towing capacity for the prado 5dr turbo diesel gxl. I know the tank capacity is 150 litres due to the seat folding into the floor. i saw a new color called steel grey on the road the other day and its the hero colour!!

If towing capacity on 5dr is 3.0t, does this mean it also has 300kg max ball weight (10% of tow capacity) - unlike Pajero which only allows max 180kg ball weight with 3.0t tow weight.
does 3.0t tow weight apply regardless of no of passengers - Pathfinder is 3.0t tow capacity minus the weight of the passengers etc
Shame about the smaller fuel tank. Was 180 now 150, they say better fuel economy but will that be the case when crossing the desert? Don’t think so.
As with Doug I would like to know if the towball weight is 300Kg and also get confirmation that the 5 door has a tow capacity of 3000kg. I was told by my dealer that it was 2750kg for the 5 door and 3000kg for the 3 door. Can Werner Toyota clear this up and give an indication of pricing for the 5 door GXL.
The towing capacity for the 5 door is 2500kg and the 3 door is 3000kg.

Some dealers have a free hand to manipulate models to much fit their greedy appetite for more revenue. Therefore, it depends who is your dealer.
I heard today the top of the range, Kakadu (does not conjure up same feelings as Grande name to me, not as stylish sounding) is going to be $89K plus
Seems a massive price hike!

I hope that the off road reliability has improved with the new model and that they have changed the rear diff as they have a nasty habit of breaking in the middle of no where. Pajero 4WD system has always been better off road but because it doesnt have a live rear axle for the die hards it gets over looked, better warranty too.
I would buy Toyota Prado not for the look only for the reliability and the fuel economy. But I disagree with the size going bigger, don’t like the wheel at the back door, shouldn’t be any lower and they should review the curves in the next a few years. It’s not ugly but it’s not attractive, lack of design!!!

It has lost rear head space due to drop away seats
The wood grain is very plastic looking - not sure why that has been brought back, the black onyx is more attractive
In my opinion it is not ugly, it is different and in time will probably grow on me
I have had my Grande Diesel for two years now and love it - so won’t change imminently
