If you have been following the GT-R story on TMR then you will know all about the the rather 'unique' ECU Nissan have fitted to their hero. It is a particularly authoritarian ECU, that not only speed limits the GT-R to 180km/h but also makes it very difficult to modify the engine or even upgrade the wheels. Attempting to do so, reportedly results in a very upset GT-R.

Just as we predicted, the ‘uncrackable’ GT-R ECU has been cracked or at least one part of it has been. North American tuners COBB have managed to modify the GT-R’s speed limiter and remove the speed restriction.

They are now believed to be working on being able to modify fuel-mapping and boost pressure, making it possible to effectively fit aftermarket go-faster items, such as larger exhausts and intercoolers, to name but a few.

Prior to COBB making their breakthrough, there have been a number of Japanese tuners who have made inroads into the dark world of the GT-R’s ECU and as a result, have been able to fit larger wheels and modified exhaust systems.

It won’t be long now before the tuners will get their way with the new GT-R and we will see the full ability of the VR38DETT revealed. Of some concern to Nissan will be the ability of tuners with a tweak here or there to match or exceed outputs of the yet to be released GT-R V-Spec.
