YAMAHA HAS ADDED the special-edition MT-01 SP "Torque Sports" bike to its Australian motorcycle line-up, offering improved suspension hardware, tweaked aesthetics and stickier tyres.

A curious combination of a big, cruiser-style 1670cc V-Twin engine and a lithe sports/naked bike frame, the base MT-01 promises an abundance of low-down torque and a highly sporty ride.

The limited-edition MT-01 SP takes performance up a notch, however, bringing Ohlins suspension and Pirelli tyres into the mix.

The Ohlins components consist of a set of 43mm front forks and a rear shock absorber with remote oil reservoir. Spring and damper rates have been thoroughly retuned, and Yamaha says the Ohlins suspension improves both handling and stability.

Pirelli Diablo Rosso tyres increase the amount of mechanical grip at the rider's disposal, and are sized 120/70R17 at the front and 190/50R17 at the rear.

Improving ergonomics are a pair of fatter 28.6mm diameter tapered handlebars, which replace the standard 25.4mm bars and are capped by a machined alloy handlebar crown. A new red/white/black colour scheme adorns the MT-01 SP, and generous applications of chrome and polished metal further enhances the bike's exterior.

The 2009 Yamaha MT-01 SP is available now in limited numbers from Yamaha dealers nationwide. Retail pricing starts at $25,999, not including on-road costs.
