RACING SIMULATOR enthusiasts keeping score can tick off another pair of boxes today: games publisher Turn 10 has announced that the Bugatti Veyron, along with eight V8 Supercar race cars, will join the Forza Motorsport 3 line-up.

A new video released today shows developers at Turn 10 enthusiastically describing the challenges involved in accurately portraying a real car, in this case the Veyron, in the virtual reality of video games.

Turn 10 boss Dan Greenawalt said that being able to offer the Veyron in Forza 3 allows fans of the game and the car itself to experience one of the world’s rarest supercars with an “unparalleled level of realism”.

“Few people will ever get to see this car in person, let alone race or drive one, so the fact that we have it in Forza Motorsport 3 where it’s fully drivable, tunable, paintable and even damageable is a very exciting concept to us,” Greenawalt said.

Joining the Veyron in the latest instalment of the popular racing franchise will be eight of Australia’s V8 Supercars.

Fans will have the opportunity to thrash the likes of Jamie Whincup’s Team Vodafone Falcon (before the team defects to Holden next year) around internationally renowned tracks like Suzuka, the Nurburgring Nordschleife and Sebring International Raceway.

Mark Winterbottom tests his skills on Forza Motorsport 3 on Xbox 360

Mark Skaife, owner of the Holden Racing Team and five-time Bathurst winner, told media that Forza Motorsport 3 represents a new opportunity for Holden and Ford fans to go head-to-head online.

“With 20 million people connected to Xbox Live, Australian Forza Motorsport 3 fans will never be short of competition online.

“As racers the world over realise the potential of the V8 Supercars, the Holden versus Ford rivalry will most certainly swell beyond our shores.”

Well done to Turn 10 on the Veyron, it looks superb from this video. The only thing that got me was the footage of the driver powersliding the Veyron around some bends - of course I couldn’t say whether or not that’s actually possible but from what I’ve seen and read about the car, it didn’t seem as though its handling characteristics are conducive to that sort of driving style - I thought it was much more of a grip and go chassis than tail-out oversteer. You can even see wheelspin off the line, which is not what I would have expected.

nevertheless I’ve got my copy reserved for October!

I’m guessing that the powersliding scenes are the result of the kind of extreme customisation that Forza 3 is supposed to offer… I guess we’ll see!

I’m actually a bit shocked they were able to get the Veyron, damage and all. Excellent news though. Already got my LE preorder on at JB ($99 vs $120 at EB), counting the days till release…

Damn Tony D! Wish you’d told me about the deal at JBs! Ordered mine through EB.

My Xbox recently got the RROD and when I got it back after it was fixed I found that MS had wioed the hard drive and I lost ALL of my Forza2 saves and cars! I cried :*(

Oh well, I will start all over again with Forza3 :)
