THE BLUEZERO E-CELL was first revealed at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, the concept’s 17.5kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor paired with a range-extending 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine borrowed from the Smart Fortwo.

Today, Mercedes has announced that a new version of the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS will be shown at Frankfurt this month.

The lithium-ion battery’s charge capacity has been boosted to 20kW, giving the electric motor an output of 100kw and 320Nm of torque.

Mercedes claims the electric motor alone is capable of sending the front-wheel-drive hybrid Merc to 100km/h in “under 11 seconds”.

Range for the electric motor is rated at 100km on a single charge. The range-extending 50kW petrol engine increases that distance to around 600km.

Interestingly, for those needing to get home but without time for a full re-charge, the lithium-ion battery can store enough power from a 30 minute recharge to travel 50km.

The BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS employs a unique sandwich floor architecture, introduced ten years ago in the A-Class and later used in the development of the B-Class.

A production version of the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS is expected to follow, however Mercedes-Benz has not offered a time-frame for its launch.

is that a b-class facelift? looks ugly but decent powerplant though.

Sound like typically top shelf Mercedes vehicle concepts, but what percentage of the population will be able to afford them?
