In Australia, we didn’t have a great deal of exposure to the original Ford Capri. We are more familiar with the ungainly looking Mazda based convertible that borrowed the Capri name for a while and much like the real Capri, eventually fizzled out.
The ‘real’ Capri came out of the UK and featured anything from a range of wheezy four-cylinders up to the range topping GT V6 which was a serious performance car thanks to its 3.0-litre V6.
The Capri name-plate has been gone but not forgotten for more than a few years now but recent news suggest that Ford are looking to resurrect the iconic badge to give VW a run for their money with the new Scirocco.
With the original Capri due to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, reports out of Germany are suggesting that Ford will be presenting a new Capri concept to celebrate the milestone.
Its believed that the concept will form the basis of a new Mark 4 Capri that should be on the roads by 2012. Like the original Capri, the new car will feature a range of four-cylinder engines. Unlike the old Capri there is also likely to be a five-cylinder engine option suggesting that the hi-po version will be powered by Volvo’s excellent five-cylinder turbo mill.
We should expect the new Capri to feature Ford’s current ‘kinetic design’ and to be a similar size to the VW Scirocco.

40 YEARS for the capri name, let's hope it has the iconic looks still. the kinetic cues should suit this car.
