OPERATION ARDENT II kicked off overnight, with Victoria Police issuing 94 penalty notices in an 8-hour blitz on Melbourne roads in and around the city.

Targeting speeding motorists and drink drivers, 25 police officers in marked and unmarked cars and motorcycles blitzed the Westgate Freeway, Bolte Bridge and the surrounding CityLink roads and CBD arterial roads.

Running from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm last night, 94 motorists were nabbed for speeding, using mobile phones while driving, having unrestrained children in vehicles, and other traffic offences.

Mobile EPA testing stations also saw 10 motorists issued penalty notices for noisy exhausts and similar offences.

One driver had his vehicle impounded after Police caught him doing burnouts.

A learner driver, also wanted for an aggravated burglary and a serious assault, was caught with a blood alcohol reading of 0.066%.

Dubbed Operation Ardent II, the blitz that started last night will run across the weekend and target drink drivers and speeding motorists in Brimbank, Melbourne, Boroondara, Casey, Yarra Ranges, Kingston, Mornington Peninsula, Dandenong, Frankston and Geelong.

More than 30 police vehicles will be engaged in Ardent II during peak periods, and four booze buses will prowl greater Melbourne streets to catch drink and drug drivers.

Deputy Commissioner for Road Policing Ken Lay said in a statement yesterday that police would be putting even more pressure on drunk, drugged and speeding drivers over the next three nights.

“During Ardent II, we’ll be increasing the police presence, upping our numbers and throwing everything we have at dangerous drivers,” Mr Lay said.

“If you drink and drive, or take drugs and drive, we don’t want to hear your excuses. You’ll be booked and removed from the road for a long time.”
