MERCEDES-BENZ has been caught testing a convertible variant of its upcoming SLS AMG supercar in the United States, confirming recent rumours of an SLS Roadster.
The lightly-camouflaged test mules appear to be undergoing final stages of pre-production testing, with the black vinyl cladding hiding what appears to be a production-ready body.
The finished product could be in Mercedes showrooms as soon as one year after the gullwinged SLS AMG hardtop makes its European sales debut, and would take over from the SLR Roadster as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship convertible.
The Roadster’s engine and drivetrain layout will likely be shared with the coupe, although performance numbers may be blunted by the extra weight of the convertible roof mechanism and the additional body strengthening.
It’s hard to discern exactly what lies beneath the camouflage, but it appears the SLS AMG Roadster will have a traditional fabric top instead of a metal folding roof.
The SLS AMG gullwing is slated to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. A release date for the Roadster variant will likely be announced at the event.

At the moment I can’t say it’s inspiring me with lust like the SLR did, unfortunately…
