AUSTRALIAN COUPLE Helen and John Taylor, on a tour across the continental United States, have broken their own Guinness record for fuel economy.
Achieving a fuel consumption figure of just 3.46 l/100km (67.9mpg), the Taylors completed a three-week, 14,483km lap of the lower 48 states, starting and finishing their trip in Virginia.
Guinness required that the duo pass through 14 specific checkpoints along the way, and that all speed limits be obeyed.
The previous record, set by the couple last year, was 3.9 l/100km (58.82mpg). Both records, old and new, were set in a US-market 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
Perhaps more astounding than the back-to-back record trips is that the Taylors hold more than 80 fuel-economy and driving world records.
The couple said that the Jetta’s EPA-tested fuel economy rating - 7.8 l/100km for city driving and 5.7 l/100km on the highway - along with low rolling resistance Goodyear tyres, contributed to the record-breaking journey.
“We hope our record-breaking journey helps educate the driving public that decisions such as choosing the right tires, using the right fuel and adopting fuel-saving driving techniques can help anyone save money and fuel, and reduce carbon emissions,” Helen Taylor said.

This couple are amazing when it comes to *frugal* [tm.F-0] driving, you could well call them World-Champions.
It’s a pity they did/nt use the SEAT Ibiza Ecomotive, they could have well saved a extra 10/15/20% fuel per 100km travelled, been tested and uses just 2.9l/100km which is simply amazing.
New gen VW Polo Bluemotion 1.2 DIEsel are talking low 2’s/100km will be the most economical non hybrid on the planet, i want to see UNDER 2L per 100km…ON LPG!
Cheers,
F-0
It already uses just 2.9L/100km, i think that can be reduced more
that’s amazing! just to think what the future holds, there will be some amazingly low fuel figures out there in the next ten years, owning anything that does over 10l/100km will make you an outcast! or show how rich you are when oil is so pricey…wait, it is now!! hehehe
This almost wants me to take a Dodge Viper and set a “worst fuel economy” world record. Anyone want to sponsor?!
Well done, but personally I would find that incredibly boring to do
Yeh, with a Bluemotion they would get figures hybrids cant touch
I could do that.
Anyone want to sponsor me.
I could use a free holiday LOL
How about telling us how they did it?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
