PEUGEOT WILL USE next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show and the excitement generated by the recently revealed RCZ sports car to showcase its HYbrid4 powertrain.
The HYbrid4 system is the first of its kind - utilising diesel-electric technology instead of the more common petrol-electric combination - and has been designed to capitalise on the widespread acceptance of diesel fuel in the European market.
Unlike most petrol-electric hybrid models already on the market, Peugeot’s HYbrid4 system uses the conventional diesel engine to power the front wheels, with the rear wheels driven by an electric motor.
It’s this novel hybrid all-wheel-drive approach that gives the technology its name.
The HYbrid4 technology is described as a parallel system, allowing for motivation to be provided in any of three states: diesel-only, electric-only, or the two working in tandem.
Both the 3008 HYbrid4 and RCZ Hybrid4 models feature stop-start technology, and combined with the hybrid system, CO2 emissions are reduced by 35 percent to just 99g/km.
Power for the HYbrid4-equipped Peugeot, due to go on sale in Europe in 2011, is expected to be around 147kW.
The RCZ HYbrid4 is a mere concept at this stage, but with the RCZ to be offered with a diesel engine among the powertrain options, a production version of the RCZ HYbrid4 may not be far behind.
PSA partner Citroen has previously experimented with the HYbrid4 powertrain, testing a diesel-electric hybrid C4 rally car in April.
