Volkswagen have debuted their new ‘practical sports car’, the Scirocco coupe at this years Geneva Motor Show, 34 years after the release of the original Scirocco. The new Scirocco is largely based on the Golf platform and brings together a spacious coupe body with the latest in engine and transmission technology.

We new Scirocco first came to light back in 2006 as the Iroc Concept and features that cars aggressive flowing coupe design and ‘poised to strike’ looks.

Although based on the Golf platform, the Scirocco sits significantly closer to the pavement and is somewhat wider. It has been designed to seat four adults in comfort as can be seen from the interior shots. The Scirocco is not shy when it comes to taking on a fortnights shopping either, with the back seats folded down there is a commendable 755 litres of cargo space.

The Scirocco will feature an adaptive chassis control system with three settings, Normal, Comfort and Sport, along with sport style bucket seats, a six airbag package and 17in alloy wheels as standard across the range.

A variety of engine options will be available, all of which feature forced induction and direct-injection, including both TSI and TDI variants. The three TSI engine variants include an entry level 90kW/122hp four-cylinder a mid range 118kW/160hp four cylinder, with the top-shelf option being a 147kW/200hp four-cylinder. With 147kW on tap the Scirocco is capable of handling the 0-100km/h dash in 7.2 seconds and averaging a respectable 7.6L/100km.

The TDI engine option is a common-rail four-cylinder diesel that produces 103kW/140hp.

A seven speed DSG gearbox is available on the TDI variant as well as the TSI base engine, with the more powerful TSI engined cars being available with the stronger six-speed DSG.

Word is that we will see the Scirocco in Australia at some stage, following its European release in the second half of this year.
