AUDI HAS RELEASED the drop-top version of its A5 coupe into the Australian market, the second body style in the A5 range and the replacement for the A4 Cabriolet.

Priced from $94,900, the A5 Cabriolet commands a premium over the A4 convertible it replaces, but comes with a more frugal range of powerplants, more power and more technology.

The A5 Cabriolet 2.0 TFSI starts off the range, powered by Audi's ubiquitous 2.0 litre turbocharged direct-injected inline four.

Producing 155kW and 350Nm, the smallest motor in the A5 line-up also returns respectable fuel economy, consuming just 7.8 l/100km on the combined cycle. Performance is relatively good as well, the 2.0 TFSI sprinting from 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds.

The 3.0 TDI is the sole diesel engine offered in the A5 Cabrio, puting out 176kW and a huge 500Nm of torque. The 3.0 TDI will accelerate to triple-digit speeds in 6.4 seconds, yet drinks just 6.8 l/100km.

The 195kW 3.2 FSI petrol engine is the only non-turbocharged powerplant in the range, and the most powerful at the moment - that's until the 245kW supercharged S5 arrives in the fourth quarter of this year.

The 3.2 FSI develops 330Nm between 3000 and 5000rpm, less torque than the 3.0 TDI, but its higher 195kW peak power output more than compensates.

All engines are mated to Audi's seven-speed twin-clutch S tronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel-drive system as standard.

Audi's drive select vehicle dynamics system is optional across the range, and offers three switchable settings for the ECU, gearbox and suspension.

A dynamic steering system, electronically-adjustable dampers and a traction-promoting Sport Differential are key components of the drive select system, and are also optional.

The A5 Cabriolet's fabric roof folds away in 15 seconds, and still leaves 320 litres of cargo space in the boot when stowed. Luggage capacity swells to 750 litres with the roof up and the rear seat folded.

17-inch alloys are standard on the 2.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI, the 3.2 FSI receiving 18-inch wheels. Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lamps and LED tail lights are also standard equipment, as are a single-disc CD player and automatic climate control system.

The MMI integrated navigation system is standard on the 3.2 FSI and optional on the other two models. Milano leather upholstery is standard, and features an innovative heat-reflecting surface that reduces seat temperature on hot days.

The 2010 A5 Cabriolet range starts with the 2.0 TFSI, which is priced from $94,900 before on-road costs.

The A5 Cabriolet 3.0 TDI has a retail price of $112,500 and the current range topper, the A5 Cabriolet 3.2 FSI, will set buyers back $116,500.
