Navigon Launches MobileNavigator Satellite Navigation iPhone App For Australia

Mike Stevens | Aug 6, 2009

NAVIGON AG has today launched the full version of its MobileNavigator iPhone satellite navigation application for Australian roads, following the release of a 'Lite' version in July.

MobileNavigator, unlike the inbuilt Google Maps application and thanks to its locally stored apps, can be used without an internet connection.

Featuring a simple intuitive user-interface, the MobileNavigator app offers voice announcements, intelligent address entry, and a variety of views including Reality View Pro: a realistic display of freeway and tollway interchanges and exits.

Other features include a speed assistant with audio-visual warning, day and night mode, direct access to contacts in the iPhone address book, Take Me Home function, Lane Assistant Pro, and quick access to user-defined points of interest nearby and along the selected route.

Until August 15, Navigon's MobileNavigator Australia is available for the discounted price of $69.99, before switching to its regular retail price of $99.99.

MobileNavigator is compatible with iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Click here to view MobileNavigator in the iTunes Music Store (link will open iTunes on your computer).

STAY TUNED for TMR's upcoming review of Navigon's MobileNavigator iPhone app.

Anyone considering this should be aware that it may or may not be against the law to interact with this app while you're driving, since you're not allowed to use your phone while driving. Touching the phone screen = using the phone, no different to sending an sms etc according to the law.

Probably should come bundled with a window mount and a charger for the iPhone too, right? Especially considering that running this application is likely to run your battery down faster than usual and as it also acts as your phone, you don't want to be going on a long trip to the outback and then find out you can't use your phone because the battery is flat.

The other question is that of the price of map updates. Tom Tom updates seem fairly reasonable.

    Otherwise it looks pretty cool.

HOw does this work? Does the iPhone operate like a GPS unit so that their are no charges? Or do you pay through the nose of your service provider? One thing I like about dedicated GPS units is they cost nothing to run as long as you have the maps donwloaded which you can find for free these days on torrent sites.

    Jess,

The iphone has an inbuilt dedicated GPS chipset and antenna, and also supports AGPS (assisted GPS thru mobile tower triangulation).

A window mount would be good, but tomtom hasnt released their package yet. Might be worth while waiting for this instead as they are offering it in their release.
