MAZDA HAS TODAY revealed a pair of images of the Mazda MX-5 Superlight, a surprise concept the company plans to unveil at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The MX-5's folding roof stand, door handles and front windscreen have been replaced by a revised rear deck with streamlined rollbars, smooth door-skins and a dash-top that melds seamlessly with the bodywork.

Designed at Mazda's European studios in Oberusel, Germany, the MX-5 Superlight is understood to be a commemorative project to celebrate the MX-5's 20th anniversary this year.

Mazda has yet to offer any official details for the MX-5 Superlight, but according to British magazine car, it remains a concept for now.

Despite the lack of technical information, the Superlight name implies that the work on this special MX-5 reaches beneath the skin, including weight-reduction and handling modifications.

No windscreen but it is a concept car! The idea is good though, that cars need to be lighter, not necessarily more powerful. The trend of our Falcodores to get bigger and heavier with each incarnation and rely on every increasing cubic inches to compensate had been a poor trend and land us in the trouble we are in today. Even now they are making the Falcodores' engines smaller but no talk about making them lighter...We need good engineering and fast to survive the next phase.

    Orca,
that applies to every single car in the market. A C63 weighs as much as an XR6 Turbo!
A Lancer now weighs as much as an AU2 XR6!

    Who needs a windscreen?
Motorbikes have gone back to naked, so to now the sports car.
Just put on a pair of old-time flying goggles and have some fun.
Feel the wind in your hair for a change!

Will this make way for a new series of track cars?

To AB, you are right, all cars need to be lighter as well as more fuel efficient, then they can not only retain performance and reduce consumption but will also have better handling characteristic.

To Davo, It may be fun having no windscreen but I am not sure if I would be happy to have a stone flicked back at me from the car in front without the protection of a windscreen..:-)

To abc, concept cars are just that: concept!, there is a big jump between the concept car and the production car which has to satisfy all the local safety design rules of each country it is sold in. I doubt if a car can be sold in Australia without a windscreen!

It is a beautiful beast though...you must admit!

Shame there's no front end shot. If it's intended as a track day special, I don't see an issue with no front windscreen. The driver would have to don a helmet anyway. And it's not unusual when you consider others such as the Lotus 2-Eleven.

The front windshield is one of the best place to lose the weight on the body. It would give the car an even lower centre of gravity.

Mazda: A thousand times, build this!

Doing this would paradoxically make MX-5 the manliest car on the road.
