LAMBORGHINI CEO Stephan Winkelmann, speaking with German car magazine Automobilwoche, has hinted that the Italian supercar manufacturer could reveal a hybrid model in 2015.

Utilising a small electric motor paired with a conventional petrol engine, Lamborghini’s hybrid supercar would help the company tackle its goal of cutting emissions by 35 percent.

Winkelmann said the company will spend around AU$59 million between now and 2015, in an effort to reduce emissions in both its vehicles and its production facilities.

Hybrid technology is expected to play a role in achieving the company’s goal of reaching its emissions targets, although Winkelmann acknowledges that all-electric cars have little interest for Lamborghini.

Lamborghini has cut tailpipe emissions by 18 percent with the recent Gallardo LP560-4, achieved through conventional refinements of the existing V10 powerplant.

Decreasing vehicle mass, reducing mechanical friction and boosting combustion efficiency of the full vehicle line-up are all part of the company’s plans to achieve a 35 percent reduction in emissions.

From a production perspective, a photovoltaic array atop the company’s Sant’Agata assembly plant will supply more green energy for the Lamborghini factory.
