2009 Mitsubishi Challenger Australian Debut Put On Hold Until Next Year

THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS has been cited by Mitsubishi Motors Australia as the main reason behind its decision to delay the introdution of the all-new Challenger 4x4 into the Australian market.

The Challenger was originally set to be re-introduced into Australian showrooms this year, however Mitsubishi Australia is now shooting for a new launch date sometime in the first quarter of 2010.

The Challenger will arrive with just one engine, the turbocharged 131kW 2.5 litre diesel inline four that will also feature in the updated 2010 Triton range.

A five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic will be the only transmission options, while power will be taken to all four wheels via the same dual-range Super Select 4WD system that hangs beneath the Pajero 4x4.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Challenger will also be built atop the Triton's ladder-framed platform, however the rear suspension will forgo the leaf springs of its load-lugging cousin in favour of a pair of more passenger-friendly coils.

Precise specifications for Australian-market vehicles have not been released, however the Challenger will likely hit the showrooms wearing 17-inch alloys as standard, with ABS, airconditioning and a waterproof luggage compartment floor as standard. Foglights and side and curtain airbags will be available on top-spec models.
