Fuji Heavy Industry (FHI) will be showing off their world first “Boxer-Turbo-Diesel” at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show which runs from March 8 – 18. FHI have designed the new turbo-diesel for use by Subaru, their automotive division.

Subaru are expected to introduce the new engine into their European range during 2008, in a move designed to take full advantage of the popularity enjoyed by diesel powered cars throughout Europe.

FHI’s boxer-turbo-diesel benefits from the strength, rigidity and low NVH that is inherent in the horizontally opposed (boxer) engine design. Subaru believe that the low down torque of the boxer-turbo-diesel compliments the added traction offered by their symmetrical AWD system and as such will be displaying the new engine (in Geneva) coupled to their AWD system.

The exact specifications of the new turbo diesel will no-doubt become known in early March, in the meantime we are left with the following all-to-brief press release.

Exhibition Outlines of the 77th Geneva International Motor Show: FHI to unveil the “SUBARU BOXER TURBO DIESEL” engine

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, will exhibit the “SUBARU BOXER TURBO DIESEL” engine and the Subaru R1e electric vehicle at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show, will open its doors to the general public from March 8 through 18, 2007 (Press Days: March 6 and 7, 2007) in Geneva, Switzerland. FHI will give a press briefing on Tuesday, March 6, at 10:15, at the Subaru booth.

1. SUBARU BOXER TURBO DIESEL

The “SUBARU BOXER TURBO DIESEL” engine, which will be introduced into the European market, takes advantage of the inherent superiority of Horizontally -Opposed engines, such as high rigidity and low noise and vibration, resulting in no need of a balancer shaft. In addition, it has also realized compact design, which stands on a par with the Subaru Horizontally-Opposed gasoline engine of the same displacement.

This “SUBARU BOXER TURBO DIESEL” engine will be mounted on Subaru’s proprietary symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system as in the case of the gasoline unit. In order to highlight the advantages coming from the combination of the torquey diesel engine and the great traction obtained through the SUBARU Symmetrical AWD system, , this engine will be on display coupled with the drivetrain.

The vehicles fitted with the “SUBARU BOXER TURBO DIESEL” engines are slated to hit the European market in 2008.

2. Subaru R1e

At present, ten units of the Subaru R1e electric vehicle are used for daily business operations by The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated (TEPCO), Subaru’s joint development partner, for road-testing with an eye to a market debut down the road. FHI intends to commercialize the Subaru R1e as a short-distance commuter car based on the Subaru R1 minivehicle currently available on the Japanese market.

A TEPCO-developed high-speed charger that will charge 80% in no more than 15 minutes will be also showcased.
