THE APPLE IPHONE is fast becoming the mobile gaming platform of choice, allowing gamers burdened with a life on public transport to ditch their regular portable gaming unit in favour of the iPhone, a device they're probably already carrying anyway.

With the likes of Firemint's Real Racing and RedLynx's DrawRace, car enthusiasts can toss out that old Bejeweled app and devote those boring train, bus and tram hours to destroying the competition.

Real Racing, developed by Aussie developers Firemint, utilises the iPhone's inbuilt accelerometer for tilt-based steering (though the more traditional touch controls can also be used), offering 57 events, 36 cars, a dozen tracks, local multiplayer via wireless connection, and online league boards.

With graphics on par with any Sony PSP or Nintendo DS offering, Real Racing may just prove to be the underdog success of 2009.

RedLynx has taken a different approach with its DrawRace app, where instead of racing in the usual fashion, the player literally draws the desired course or racing line through the track, before setting the car off in an almost slot-car-like path along your drawn line.

Players can compare their racing strategy against opponents online, uploading scores to beat and seeing other drivers takes on the best path.

Both apps are available now on the iTunes App Store. Real Racing will set you back $12.99, while DrawRace goes for a mere $1.19.
