THE GOODWOOD Festival of Speed (UK) is but a few days away from opening to the public, and it's shaping up to be a hell of a show.

The Infiniti Essence and GTbyCitroen concepts are already set to make an appearance at the show, and now Audi has announced that it will be celebrating its centenary at Goodwood in a big way.

A very big way.

The German automaker will be honoured by a sculpture designed by renowned artist Gerry Judah. An enormous tribute to the marque, which literally ties the company's past and present together, the sculpture is comprised of 40 tonnes of steel and incorporates two signature Audi automobiles.

At 35 metres tall the sculpture dwarfs Goodwood House, and it took 12 men, two cranes and four weeks to erect. A 2009 Audi R8 V10 is suspended at the tip of the sculpture, and is linked to a 1937 Auto Union streamliner by a pair of steel 'tyre tracks'

Judah normally designs a sculpture to honour the featured marque at each Goodwood Festival of Speed, but this time he's outdone himself.

" I wanted to design something iconic because this year is Audi’s 100th anniversary, Judah said.

"The sculpture had to have a celebratory theme and it also had to encompass the qualities of the Audi brand: sporty, prestigious and progressive.

"I drew about 20 ideas and some had elaborate bridges with vaulted arches but somehow they didn’t have quite the right style.

"I then had a flash of inspiration and designed this ‘swoosh’ with a car at either end to represent Audi’s 100-year history."

In addition to the hulking tribute, Audi will also be exhibiting a wide range of its most iconic cars, from 1930s Auto Union racers to the first quattro-equipped rallycars right through to the brand's present day performance cars.
