FRESH IMAGES of an unidentified Lamborghini Gallardo variant have been circulating the web, prompting many to speculate that they may be the first shots of the rumoured rear-wheel-drive Gallardo LP550-2.
In Lamborghini parlance, the “-2″ suffix denotes just two driven wheels - a number of significance considering all of the supercar maker’s recent road cars have been four-wheel drive.
The Diablo was the last model to be motivated by the rear wheels alone, and a new RWD variant of the Gallardo would certainly add some spice to Lamborghini’s lineup. But do these pictures show such a car?
Given the stripe package and contrasty black-on-white interior, it’s clearly some kind of upcoming special edition; but determining its drivetrain layout from these images alone is near on impossible. There aren’t any noticable differences in bodywork between this and the current LP560-4, but the 19-inch wheels are reminiscent of the old Superleggera.
So, while internet scuttlebutt says this might just be the first RWD Lambo in nearly a decade, it’s simply too early to tell. Let’s see what Lamborghini have to say about this one first, eh?

I have spoken to a friend at Lamborghini Australia who confirmed to me today this is a real car and will make production. They wanted to widen their customer appeal to 2wd fans, in other words their main rivals fans. This will be their budget model in the range.
