Mercedes-Benz have been upstaged by yet another bunch of leaked images, this time we get to see their new facelifted 2009 SL. In the absence of an official press release, it becomes a matter of spotting the differences.
The refreshed SL features a heavily revised front end, with tweaked headlights, a new grille now featuring just one cross-bar and a prominent three pointed star, while the bonnet appears to have grown a few bumps. The vents in the front guard are also a new design and out the back there is a new rear apron, among other detail changes.
The interior has also been refreshed with perhaps the most prominent (and odd) feature being the new headrests which for all the world look like E.T.’s head… A new centre console also features, along with a larger sat nav screen.
It is rumoured that the refresh will include a new entry-level model, the SL280, that will be equipped with a 3.0-litre V6, while a new variable ratio, speed sensitive steering system will be a feature across the SL range.
Full details will be supplied when Mercedes go ‘official’ with the SL update, in the meantime check out the image gallery below.

I’m not sure I’d used the word “leaked.” There was nothing furtive about the deluge of SL pictures that’s hit just about every car website out there.
‘Leaked’ images are becoming quite the norm, no-doubt all part of the theatrical marketing hype and build-up to an official reveal. The recent spate of MB ‘leaks’ originated from an Italian site and spread virally from there.
It’s all part of the fun.
Absolutely.
