MERCEDES-BENZ'S fastest executive sedans, the AMG-fettled S63 and S65, are now on sale in Europe and will be heading 'Downunder' soon.

The mildly facelifted models bring a new look, some new tech and a new level of safety to the top end of the S-Class range, and although both use the same powertrain packages as their predecessors, that certainly doesn't mean they're slow.

Small ECU revisions see the S63 AMG's power output rising from 386kW to 390kW, while torque remains at 630Nm. Similar channges to the S65 AMG's tune has power up 5kW to 455kW, with peak torque limited to a phenomenal 1000Nm to preserve the five-speed automatic's internals.

Fuel economy and CO2 emissions also improve thanks to some judicious ECU fiddling, but prospective buyers are unlikely to be concerned with something as mundane as fuel consumption.

Instead, they're bound to be wowed by the new Torque Vectoring Braking system, Crosswind Stabilisation programme, Adaptive Braking system and speed-sensitive variable ratio steering - all of which are new for the 2010 S63 and S65.

Benz's drowsiness-detecting Attention Assist system also features on the new S-Class range-toppers, as are the self-guiding Lane Keep Assist and crash-detecting Pre-Safe systems.

The updated Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and S65 AMG are due to arrive in Australia by early October at the latest, where they will launch alongside the rest of the refreshed S-Class range. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but Mercedes-Benz Australia does not anticipate any significant increase over the retail price of the current models.

Both models are now available in Europe, with European pricing starting at €137,683 (AU$244,755) for the S63 AMG short wheelbase, and €221,221 (AU$393,258) for the S65 AMG.
