MITSUBISHI UK has announced the availability of its ultra-efficient version of the already thrifty Colt, the Colt ClearTec, which uses a number of mechanical refinements to lower fuel consumption and boost efficiency.

A basic stop-start system is the biggest change, cutting fuel use by shutting down the engine when the car rolls to a stop.

The Colt's 1.3 litre petrol motor restarts when the clutch is depressed or if ancillaries like the airconditioner or demister demand power. When combined with the Colt ClearTec's higher gearing, high-efficiency alternator, low-viscosity engine oil and low-resistance bearings and tyres, it generates significant efficiency bonuses.

Mitsubishi UK reckons the Colt ClearTec's stop-start system alone offers a reduction in carbon emissions and fuel consumption of between 25 to 30 percent. That results in a peak fuel economy figure of just 3.58 l/100km and a combined figure of 5.0 l/100km, while CO2 output drops 24g/km to just 119g/km.

Mitsubishi UK plans to extend the ClearTec technology across the rest of its range (bar the Pajero and Triton) within the next three years.

An Australian release of ClearTec models is not currently planned by Mitsubishi Australia, however low-emission additions to the local line-up are expected to surface in the near future.
