Holden have revealed the first official details of their new Commodore Sportwagon. Holden will be unveiling the production version of their Sportwagon at this years Melbourne Motor Show at the end of February and have released the basic specifications to keep us happy in the meantime.

The Sportwagon range will closely follow that of the VE sedan, with seven separate Sportwagon variants and three different engines being available. You will be able to buy a Sportwagon in Omega, Berlina and Calais trim or for those preferring more ‘sport’ in their sportwagon an SV6, SS and SS-V version will also be available.

Two V6 engine options will be available, including the standard Alloytec 3.6-litre V6 that comes paired with the outdated four-speed automatic or the higher output version of the same engine that will get the better five-speed automatic. The 6.0-litre V8, found standard in the SS range will also be available with a choice of a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox.

All Sportwagon models will feature reverse parking sensors as standard and are said to mirror the specifications of their sedan counterpart, meaning standard stability control and four airbags, with side curtain airbags being available as an option. Pricing is unknown but expect a premium over the sedan of upwards of $2,000.

The Sportwagon is targeted primarily at the private buyer and as such there is no mention of an LPG version in the Holden press release.

“We think this car will have a much broader appeal than the traditional fleet vehicle. With the previous wagon, the key focus was on utility, while this model is about versatility, a good driving experience and great looks,” said Philip Brook, GM Holden’s Director of Marketing.

The new Sportwagon is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of this year.
