Leaked images and sketchy details doing the rounds earlier this week forced BMW’s hand and they have now officially revealed the new E93 M3 convertible. As previously reported, BMW are simultaneously debuting their new seven-speed M-DCT double clutch gearbox, which promises improved performance and efficiency.

The M-DCT is the first double clutch gearbox designed to deal effectively with a high-torque, high performance application and obviously has no trouble handling the gear changes for the M3’s 4.0 litre V8, with its 309kW/420hp and 400 Nm. The M-DCT will be available across the M3 range including the new convertible (E93), the coupe (E92) and the sedan (E90).

Another feature of the M-DCT is “Drivelogic” which gives the driver a choice of eleven electronically controlled driving programs (six manual and seven automatic), the pick of which would have to be launch control, although it may be a little uncouth for the average convertible driver...

The exterior styling mirrors the coupe, aside from the three piece folding hard-top roof. Formed in lightweight steel, the three-piece roof features a fully automatic opening and closing function, along with a remote control function as standard. BMW quote the opening time for the electro hydraulically actuated roof as being 22 seconds.

BMW say the M3 convertible will accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, on its way to a speed limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Compared to the M3 coupes 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds this is a little off the pace, suggesting that the convertible has porked up quite a bit in the interest of maintaining chassis rigidity and of course fitment of the fancy three piece hard-top. New owners can expect their M3 convertible to return 12.9 litres/100 kilometres which is reasonable, given the M3’s performance potential.

The E93 M3 convertible is not due to take its first bow until the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year, and as yet there are no confirmed on-sale dates or pricing.
