RTA NSW Exploring Wider Use For E-Toll System

THE ROADS AND TRAFFIC AUTHORITY in New South Wales is exploring ways to utilise its E-Toll systems - and the E-Tag device attached to the windscreen of its customers cars - with a wider array of services to expand its customer base and revenues.

“The RTA has been investigating opportunities to extend its E-Toll applications to encourage the uptake of electronic tags and make motoring easier for existing E-Toll customers, an RTA,” an RTA spokesperson told The Motor Report.

“These opportunities include use of E-Tags in areas such as car parks and service stations.”

A similar service is available in other countries, where a hand-held E-Tag scanner is attached to fuel pumps.

“The RTA has met with Caltex, Flemington Markets, Sydney Port Authority, and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust to discuss E-Tag tolling infrastructure or services, ” the spokesperson said.

While the E-Toll technology is currently used exclusively for transit fees, expanding the technology into parking and fuel payment could see the RTA’s E-Toll revenue double to around $170 million, with potential for income up to $500 million as the technology’s presence grows.

Gotta love the RTA.

They’re looking at making it possible to use the E-tags in Car parks and to buy fuel. Interesting Idea except that by using it to fill up with petrol you could reduce your account to $0 leving you without enogh funds to uise the toll roads.
As for using it to pay for parking - Most car parking stations are privately owned which means the govt will have to give the money back to the Car Park Operators.. Not only that but what happens to the parking meters if you park on the street?

Its easy to see that yet again the RTA [in their infinite wisdom] have thought this idea through!

Why stop their why not use it to pay for Concert Tickets or Pizza or Drinks at your local bar?

dont like where this is headed…the RTA has our photo, our address, all our details, bank details (if u have an e-tag). now they want to track our spending habits and whereabouts
there’s also an article on news.com.au about banks wanting to get rid of loose change and replacing it with a chip in our phones…

In Hong Kong, the Octopus stored value card is great. It defeats the need for spare change. All of the public transport systems use them, as do places where you’d normally spend change like convenience stores and the bigger fast food outlets.

I can’t remember what details you need to supply, but for privacy’s sake you could keep it to a minimum. If a person chooses to direct debit, and therefore leave a paper trail, that’s up to them. If a person just pays cash for the RFID card and tops it up over the counter then it would be as anonymous as cash but far more convenient.

It’s a shame NSW’s implementation for the same kind of system, done by the same company, was stillborn. I can’t see the RTA doing any better. If you could have slotted such an RFID card into an in-car holder that amplified the signal so the gantries could read it then it would have been a far better fit for what the RTA wants to do.

The time of low denomination metal currency is over. Bring on stored value cards.

The RTA have one objective only.
Collect money for the NSW government.
That is the one and only thing they do well.

Honestly RTA should be doing more things with their time rather than thinking up retarded ideas!

they should concerate fixing dodgey rounds like Canterbury Road/Hume Highway/anything that leads to the city. Actually build motorways etc that work for the future…Its pretty pathetic to have 2 lane motorways and where it should be 4 lanes eachway!

I don’t understand where all our rego money goes towards consider the M7/M2/Lane Cove Tunnel etc are privately owned.

RTA Don’t plan for the future, this has to be the dumbest idea ever! They really should do more with their time.

END RANT!

The RTA has to be the worst for helping themselves to customers bank funds and using their e-tag to pay for fuel or other things would have the RTA constantly dipping into customer bank accounts.

I can just see the RTA deciding that since you put fuel in your car twice in one month plus using a toll road once that they need to take $500 just in case your usage is going to be heavy next month.

rta should note that wen ur account is low takes money out wen it feels like it and then bank charges $30.00 for not a enough funds as i,m a low user on the toll, rta has no time to tell its customers if there account is low b4 taking money out of my account, love to c more lanes and money spent instead of sitting in traffic that i pay for at tolls,

The RTA seems to have forgotten all about the large number of rental cars based out of Sydney airports…the renters dont know anything about this until their credit card is billed by the rental car companies with associated penalties applied…IDIOTS on both sides…Rental car companies and the RTA…the tourist world is being advised to stay away from Sydney roads unless they have a valid tag, which takes up to ten days for those lazy ass RTA employees to process…seems nothign ever changes with the RottenThoughtlessAssholes
