Update - March 24, 2009: This is proving to be a popular article for TMR, but did you know we have brand new articles on the Tata Nano? Click here to read them.
Tata has today unveiled its new Nano “peoples car” at the New Delhi Auto Expo. With a projected retail price of just US$2,550 or 100,000 rupees this is about as cheap as new cars get, but we won’t be seeing it in Australia.
The Nano has been developed expressly for developing markets such as Africa, South East Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America and is not likely to be marketed in North America, Europe or Australia. The Nano peoples car has for some time now been the personal goal of Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Group and Tata Motors.
“I observed families riding on two-wheelers – the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. We are happy to present the People’s Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility,” said Mr Tata at the New Delhi Auto Expo launch of the Nano.
The Nano was designed in Italy but will be built in India and features an economical and relatively clean 623cc multi-point fuel injected engine, which produces the princely sum of 25Kw/33hp. The engine is located in the rear and drives the rear wheels.
There will be two versions of the Nano available, a standard model and a luxury model with a range of body colours and accessories available. Apparently, the Nano even meets European safety standards…
Due to go on sale later in 2008, one wonders if the diminutive Nano will be sharing carpet space alongside Jaguars finest, in downtown New Delhi…
