ShareThisA year on from news that it might actually see the light of an assembly line, Citroen has reportedly confirmed that it has cancelled plans to put its GTbyCitroen supercar into limited production.
First unveiled virtually on Sony's Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and in real life at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the GTbyCitroen concept showcased French automotive styling at its most extreme.
Pressure from cheque book-waving buyers had lead Product Manager Vincent Besson to concede that Citroen was considering a short run, with a decision to be made "within the next four weeks." (at the time)
"We are now thinking of a limited run, possibly as many as 20 units," Besson said.
He added that Citroen wouldn't expect to lose any money on the low-volume GT, and as such each example would probably cost in excess of €1 million.
"The object of the car is not to earn money but not to lose money either."
Reports this week however suggest that Citroen and partner Peugeot have determined that the partnership's design and engineering resources are best directed to more practical projects - such as continuing development of the duo's next-generation model ranges.
In the past year, Citroen has revealed a number of production models - including the new C3, DS3 and C4 - along with concepts such as the Citroen Metropolis and the GQ magazine concept, GQbyCitroen.
