2008 Nissan GT-R uses GPS to disable speed-limiting at the track

As with previous GT-R’s and for that matter any car sold in the Japanese Domestic Market capable of doing more than 180km/h, Nissan’s new GT-R will be speed limited to 180km/h. In the past that meant either fitting some sort of aftermarket ECU or an electronic speed limit bypass, if you wanted some track time in your new car.

This time around, Nissan have employed even more electronic wizardry and JDM GT-R’s will use global positioning to recognize the co-ordinates of Japanese based race tracks and automatically disable the speed limiter when the GT-R is in the vicinity. Great news if you live next door to the track and a tantalizing taste of what you can’t have if you don’t…

Nissan are claiming that their new ECU is virtually bullet proof and that there are only a few people in the world who would be able to access it to vary tuning or to disable the speed-limiter. That may be true for the moment but don’t expect it to last terribly long. The Japanese tuning industry won’t remain locked out of the GT-R’s ‘dark secrets’ for long and will no-doubt develop full replacement ECU’s given time.
