Volkswagen has unveiled its latest addition to the world of station wagons, the Golf Estate, a car bearing a rather striking resemblance to the current range of Jetta’s sold in Australia.
Whether it will be labelled a Golf or Jetta ‘downunder’ remains to be seen, but the car has undergone a comprehensive design overhaul, targeted at maintaining its appeal to both families and business executives.
The front-end redesign follows the company’s ‘design DNA’ ethos, continuing Volkswagen’s current trend of featuring prominent horizontal lines as the basis of a car’s styling.
It is at the car’s rear though where the most obvious changes lie, starting with taillights that Volkswagen describes as “more elegant” than those of the previous model, along with bumpers that feature body-colouring right down to the lower section.
The Golf Estate’s power plant has been directly borrowed from its hatch sibling, while the interior also highlights its close relationship with the fast-selling hatchback.
Gauges, instruments and a new generation three-spoke steering wheel have essentially all been directly ported across from the Golf with little change, including the multifunctional display and upshift indicator.
Set to hit Europe’s motorways in September, the Golf Estate will initially be offered in three versions – Trendline, Comfortline and Highline – with the latter earmarked as the top-of-the-range model.
Volkswagen will release the car with three different engine offerings - a petrol-fuelled 70kw TSI or a choice of a two common rail turbo-diesel motors, in either 77kw or 103kw form.
A further three engines will follow in stages - two Multipoint engines and another TSI – all meeting Euro-5 emissions standards.
The base model will start at €18,500 – a little over AU$33,000 at current rates.
Will we see the Golf Estate - and a sedan version - in Australia as the Jetta? We’re awaiting comment from Volkswagen Australia on just that question, and we’ll update this post once we know.

Nup, they can keep it, just like the current ‘Golf’ wagon (its even called a Jetta wagon in North America). The Skoda Octavia estate offers a much better option as its better looking, more equipment standard and the drive/quality is the same despite costing less money.
how would the skoda scout stack up against it???
