Volkswagen has revised its Passat lineup in the UK, adding a new R Line model to the popular mid-size sedan’s specification sheet. With a focus on value for money and aesthetic appeal,  the R Line adds a range of sporting touches to the exterior and a few comfort features inside.

Available as a sedan and wagon, the Passat R line gains 17-inch ‘Monte Carlo’ alloy wheel and more aggressive front and rear bumpers. Additional chrome inserts adorn the grille for a look inspired by the range-topping R36.

Inside, the R-line comes equipped with cruise control, front seat height and lumbar adjustment, a leather trimmed multi-funtion steering wheel, centre console armrest and electronic tire pressure monitoring.

Engine choices include Volkswagen’s 90kW 1.4 litre TSI and 118kW 1.8 litre TSI petrol engines. Two 2.0 litre TDI diesels are also available, producing 81kw and 130kW.

All engines are backed by a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a six-speed DSG transmission optional for the high-output diesel.

Available from £17,040 (AU$34,662) the R Line adds just £600 (AU$1220) to the price of the basic Passat S but represents £2470 (AU$5025) of added equipment.

The Passat R line is available from Volkwagen dealers in the UK now, but there is no word yet as to when the R line goodies might be joining the Australian Passat range. We’ll keep you posted.
