BMW is no stranger to winning the engine of the year award and last year was no different. BMW’s V10 as seen in the M5 and M6 took the honours.

Last years winner the BMW V10 from the M5 and M6 was 5 times bigger than the itsy bitsy 1.0-litre Toyota are teasing us with this year…

This year BMW is hoping for a repeat performance with its 3.0-litre twin-turbo from the BMW 335i which features advanced turbo-charging technology and use of lightweight materials such as magnesium in its manufacture.

The competition includes Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre TSI which is supercharged and turbocharged and Porsche’s 3.6-litre twin turbo engine from the current Porsche 997 series.

Toyota meanwhile is setting the pulses of enthusiasts racing with their candidate being a 1.0-litre three cylinder engine said to be the lightest internal combustion engine on sale.

The awards take place at the 2007 Engine Expo in Stuttgart Germany during May. A panel of motoring journalists as opposed to engineering experts will determine the winner who will be announced on the 9th May.
