Around this time last month, the first images of the 2010 Subaru Liberty Touring - sold just about everywhere else as the Legacy - made their way online. Now, the Japanese-market version of Subaru’s new wagon has had a proper reveal.

The Australian-delivered model will be based on the Japanese version, so if you’re in the market for a new wagon, this is a glimpse of what to expect at Subaru dealerships later this year.

As to be expected, the technical details are much the same as the sedan version, with a 126kW 2.5 litre four-cylinder replacing the previous 2.0 litre unit, and a 190kW 3.6 litre flat six succeeding the 3.0 litre mill.

The performance model - the Liberty GT (sold in Japan as the B4) gets a boost as well, developing 197kW and 349Nm of torque.

All models will feature Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive, with a new CVT transmission joining the six-speed manual and five-speed automatic options.

The 2010 Subaru Liberty range will be launched in Australia this coming September.

lets hope they make the auto box available on all engines and have the cvt as an option

Another ugly car from Subaru, thought they would have learned from the Tribecca and followed the awesome looks of the Forester. Such a pity as the interior is excellent, being typical of Subaru’s functional layout. But I hope they get smarter on efficiency since AWD is slowly being replaced by fuel economy and emissions as the buyer’s checklist, AWD is such a killer when it’s time to fill up. It’s interesting to know that some Subaru dealers are hitting targets with Impreza and Forester yet others are failing suffering strong comp from other Jap brands like Mazda. Anyone I know who has bought Subaru doesn’t ever stay loyal.

if all cars looked like Holden or Fords ……what a drab old world it would be.

Had been deliberating long and hard about whether to wait for the Gen 5 or buy a runout Gen 4. Very, very few Gen4’s left .
Glad I ordered mine yesterday,as the Gen 4 is just a sleeker looking car IMHO.
Sorry Robbo, I disagree about subaru loyalty :-)

IMDave, good choice, and good to see someone is loyal, I’m sure they’re plenty of happy owners out there who are, nice to meet one :) suprised to hear not many Gen 4’s left too! Proven machine with all the issues ironed out, congrats for the purchase!

Thanks Robbo. Yeah, moving up from an MY06 N/A Impreza to the Gen4 Lib. Was really counting on getting a great deal on a runout model, however with the GFC Subaru just aren’t replacing cars as they sell, awaiting the new model. So there are under 10 manual 2.5l , N/A, wagons available in the entire country atm.
As for the Gen 5; I agree that a lot of current Subby owners will probably start looking European for their next car, as the 2010 is just boxy and bland.

Decisions…it’s either a Gen 5 GT or a VW R36. Apparently my iPhone won’t work in the R36…big problem. I reckon the cockpit on this Subby looks great. When will they be here?

I’ve owned a 2.5lt RS 2001 Bug Eye, 07 WRX and Liberty Gen 4 MY06 Liberty STI and have many friends who have had loyalty to Subaru so not agreeing with IMDave or Robbo but my personal experience has been good with Subaru and I know others who have had similar experiences. But also known people who haven’t - I think if you really looked into it NO car company would be free of having transient customers who buy one then don’t get another again.

I think it MIGHT have something to do with a combination of Free Will and Personal Opinion based on Personal Experience… But I could be wrong.

Well, u r one Subby ahead of me Glenn.
But what do u think of the Gen V lib? Will they lose customers being more generic, or gain new ones?
Personally, as I said, I’m glad I have ordered the GenIV.

i think subbie will lose customers by using the cvt box. they should have made a dsg box instead.

IMDave: To me it is uglier and I wouldn’t want a Gen5. That being said everyone claimed the new Forester and Pretzel were uglier than the previous ones and they’re selling better i think than the previous generations.

Good-slick interior, upgraded transmissions, colours. Bad-too big, huge wheel flares, generic rear tail lights, headlights too big. Back to single exhaust outlet.Heavier, thirstier? Ugly- even GT versions look tame.

i like the look of the new subaru liberty it has good looking front headlights and a new slick body kit . I also like the new spacious interior i also like to hear that their is a 197 kw 2.5 liter boxer eingen giving it alot of spin. I stell thinck their is a bet of controversy in the styleing .

I actually like the look of it. The one thing I really don’t like however, and I beleive I may not consider buying one because of this is the interior. the interior looks awful in my opinion. I guess I’ll have to wait and see one in real life before I decide tho.
