VOLKSWAGEN HAS RELEASED a series of new images and details for its upcoming Scirocco R coupe, a car Volkswagen Australia is considering for a local launch.

Motivated by a turbocharged 2.0 litre in-line four-cylinder, the Scirocco R produces 195kW and 350Nm, sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission (VW's DSG transmission is an option) and Volkswagen's XDS electronic LSD.

Braking is managed by 345mm discs up front and 310mm discs at the rear. Other features include Anti-Slip Regulation and Dynamic Chassis Control for variable damping.

Body-wise, the Scirocco R features significant updates over the regular Scirocco.

Larger air intakes feature in the front bumper, while an enlarged rear wing sits above the rear window.

A blacked-out diffuser panel is fitted in the rear bumper, flanked by a pair of chrome exhaust tips.

Inside, microfibre-trimmed sport seats feature, along with a flat-bottomed leather-rimmed steering wheel.

Piano-black accents and aluminium trim appears throughout the Scirocco R’s cabin, and DSG-equipped models also benefit from a set of wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Volkswagen Australia is considering the Scirocco R for a local launch, however pricing remains the number one stumbling block - the cost of the Scirocco puts it well above that of the Golf range, potentially making it an expensive burden for Volkswagen Australia.

Despite this, enthusiasm for the Scirocco remains high within Volkswagen Australia. The company is continuing to assess the model for the local market, but has as yet no confirmed plans to import it here.

We can only hope VW Australia comes to its senses and changes its decision to not bring Sciroccos to Oz. But I guess Subaru, Mitsubishi and Nissan are very happy that they are not.

Where do I sign the petition to bring the Scirocco here to Australia?
Come on VW! There are already enough boring cars here on our roads.

I think there might be a mistake - surely this will do better than 8.5s 0-100km/h? It should do at least 2.5s better.

So it's essentially what the car should've been in the first place (if the review on Top Gear was any way to judge it)?

So if the Scirocco will be sold for a higher price to the R20 and GTI Golfs, they won't they be making more money bringing them in limited numbers?! I don't think they cost MORE to build or bring over.... so they can sell them 10K over priced and over the GTI, R20's prices and still sell them!

Stunning vehicle. Only disappointment for me is that it doesn't use the full AWD drivetrain from the forthcoming Golf R. If it did, I would be sorely tempted. I'm not sure why they have done half the job by using the up-spec turbo engine but not running the rest. Packaging perhaps?

talking to a tow truck driver recently who said "don't buy a Golf we have to pick up heaps of them, they break down all the time."
Like a gorgeous woman- looks great but costs heaps to upkeep.

The more of them on the streets. The more you would see them break down. Isn't that completely normal?

Sorry Nightshifter but i work in a VW service centre and unfortunately they are proned to breakdowns and niggly problems. Part and parcel of the ownership of a highly engineered european vehicle, Merc and BMW suffer the same speratic problems we do. Skoda have been heavily involved in the Golf 6 which should help as they have developed a strong repitation in Europe for being less likley to break down or have irritating faults like rattles conmpared to Audi and VW.

Puts me in mind of an almost funny joke from the US:

Q: How do you know you're driving a VW?
A: The check engine light is on.
