According to the press release “The emergence of the pert, pretty face of the new Nissan Micra will have nondescript look-alike rivals across Australia scurrying to the beautician for a makeover”. Hows that for spin! That’s like suggesting we should all get our teeth done so that we could be as handsome as Steve Buscemi.

The Micra's look is certainly unmistakable in a cutesy way and its high-rise roofline, short front and rear overhangs, elevated driving position and those high-mounted circular headlights set it apart from many hatches.

The Micra features Nissan's latest generation four-cylinder aluminium 1.4-litre engine. Producing 72kW at 5,600rpm and 137Nm at 3,200rpm, Nissan say that the result is a welcome combination of punchy performance and remarkable economy from the 965 kg lightweight.

The all-aluminium, 16-valve twin cam engine features Nissan's Variable Valve Timing control system, and 'Drive-by-Wire' electronic throttle. Extensive use of low friction moving parts and lightweight pistons improve both noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels but also fuel consumption. An electronically controlled four-speed automatic with extended slip lock-up control offers smoothness, economy and is standard equipment on the Micra.

The Micra is available in a fashionable array of paint colours, with what Nissan refer to as an “urbane city-themed pallet”, including colours like Roma Red, Tokyo Silver and London Rose.

Standard kit includes air-conditioning, keyless entry and central locking, power adjustable mirrors and an MP3 compatible single slot in-dash CD player with an auxiliary MP3 input jack.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, active front headrests and dual airbags.

There is a $1,700 Micra City Collection option package which adds dual side airbags and curtain airbags as well as 15-inch alloy wheels and an MP3 compatible 6-stacker CD sound system.

Pricing for the 2008 Micra start at $14,990.
