Perhaps the most frustrating element of most racing games but absent from the legendary Gran Turismo racing simulator for the Sony PlayStation, visible car damage is now expected to feature in the massively-delayed Gran Turismo 5.
Sure, there’s a perfectly good reason for it: without permission from manufacturers to show their cars getting visibly roughed up, it can’t happen. And while developer Polyphony Digital has apparently had permission from a majority of manufacturers, it only takes one precious company to decline for it to be an overall no-go.
However, GT series creator Kazanori Yamauchi has revealed in a recent interview that car damage is finally coming to the series.
Yamauchi also promised that other features long absent from Gran Turismo, such as visible weather effects and night racing, will also appear in GT5.
The latest iteration of the famed racing simulator series has suffered more than a few delays along the way, with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue being released as something of a tide-me-over until the ‘full’ game’s unveilling. But while Yamauchi wouldn’t give a firm shipping date, rumours around the gaming circles suggest the game itself (sans Prologue) is expected to land some time around 2011-2012.

All there delays remind me another hugely popular PlayStation game.
I have a sinking feeling it’s going to be a major disappointment if the only new feature they’re bringing is damage, weather effects, night racing and an updated range of cars.
Forza 3?
There has been night racing in past versions. If I remember correctly, the Japan street circuits had them. Anyway, it’s true to say that the franchise is getting a bit tired to be honest. What they really need is a LOT more circuits. Bring back the rally stages and the European road stages (e.g. Monaco and the island stage).
yup I was just playing tourist trophy the other day admiring the tracks, gt5 needs all the tracks from GT4 and more, it’d be nice to have touge challenge tracks too. You know, mountain roads.
I love GT since I bought the original on PS1, but have switched to Forza on X360 of late… 2011-2012??!? I know all the programming takes a long time especially given the awesome level of detail, but by that stage surely a lot of the “new” cars in the game will be about 4-5 years old (E92 M3, Nissan GT-R etc). One would hope they incorporate a ‘downloadable cars’ feature like Forza to help keep the repertoire fresh.
Such a long time to wait - surely some people who were waiting out for this game since GT4 in 2004 have now dropped out of the market, if not now, then by 2012 for sure.
..And if they still have glitches like the tyre-screeching noise which sounds more like rubbing sandpaper together than actual tyres squealing, it will be more than a bit disappointing.
Godspeed, I believe I did hear a rumor (or was it confirmed?) about downloadable cars (mapped at request for a small premium). SO yea…
Anyways, I’m just getting that little bit bored of GT4 and GT5P, but 2011-12!!!! :O Well I suppose good things come to those who wait…
i have the whole entire series, and to be honest the third one and under were the best one’s ever, the fourth wasn’t all that great, and the reason why i didn’t get prologue was cuz it wasn’t the full version, so that’s why im waiting for the full game to come out, and im sure it will be worth the wait, cuz game like these have to be done professionally and very successful, one of the best racing simulation games for playstation that kill forza or any other racing game out there.
