Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but you've got to wonder just how many people would describe the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 999 Red Gold Dream as anything other than an abomination.

Swiss designer Ueli Anliker is the man behind this intriguing creation and claims to have spent more than 30,000 man hours on the finished product.

The transformation reportedly cost over AUD$6 million (€3,3 million) to complete and features more 24 carat gold than a pirate's treasure chest.

Aside from the outlandish colour scheme, the Red Gold Dream features a custom-made body kit that would look right at home in a Need For Speed video game.

We could talk about the interior, but nobody in the TMR office was able to look at it long enough to complete a sentence.

Perhaps the sorriest thing about all this is that, beneath all that red and gold, a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren longs for the sweet release that only death can bring.
