With Chrysler on the brink of collapse, the US carmaker’s proposed deal with Fiat could prove a much-needed lifeline. However, Chrysler still needs to slash its debt and have its restructuring plan accepted before Fiat will come to the party.

Further financial aid from the US government is also expected should Chrysler be able to ink the deal.

In an effort to instil confidence in its dealers, Chrysler has used a recent conference to showcase some of its up-and-coming models which, according to one insider, includes a “sporty little sedan.”

Rumours suggest the car in question is the Fiat Bravo (pictured), as the Fiat 500 is reportedly already on the roll-call.

In addition, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a refreshed 300C were also on display.

Ralph Gilles, Head of design for Chrysler, informed attendees that Chrysler intends to have its own sheet metal sitting atop the Fiat chassis.

The Fiat Bravo would fill a gap in the Chrysler lineup that’s been vacant since the  Chrysler Neon was retired in 2006.

A deal with Fiat is crucial for Chrysler, which would allow the ailing manufacturer access to Fiat platforms and fuel efficient drive trains. It’s essential for volume producers to have this market covered in the current economic climate.
