Porsche have displayed a production version of their Cayenne Hybrid at the L.A. Motor Show and in true Porsche fashion this is a hybrid with an eye on performance.

Appeasing those worried about global warming and satisfying the whims of folk who want a big performance SUV is not the easiest of tasks but Porsche are hoping to prove that the two goals are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, Porsche are making the bold claim that the Cayenne Hybrid out accelerates its conventional counterpart and does so while achieving a 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency!

"As both efficiency and performance can be improved on the Cayenne with this system, it is the best fit for Porsche," said a Porsche representative.

Porsche have positioned the electric motor directly between the Cayenne’s petrol engine and transmission a layout that Porsche claim is more compatible with the Cayenne's platform. The Cayenne’s Hybrid system is controlled by a dedicated computer dubbed the "Hybrid Manager". In order to achieve the best possible performance from the hybrid drivetrain the “Hybrid Manager” is constantly assessing some 20,000 different pieces of information.

In addition to the standard Hybrid systems, further efficiencies have been achieved by reducing load on the petrol engine. The air-conditioning runs on electric power, the braking system is assisted by a vacuum pump and the power steering is electro-hydraulic.

We can expect to see Porsche’s hybrid technology make an appearance in the upcoming Panamera four-door that is due to be released in 2009. Porsche’s hybrid system was developed in conjunction with VW and Audi who will be bringing to market very similar hybrid versions of their Touareg and Q7 SUVs.
