Lovers of cute little A-to-B commuters rejoice: Volkswagen has confirmed it is working on a new range of small cars, dubbed "New Small Family". To make the most of the platform's potential, VW also plans to sell the little blighters with Seat and Skoda badges applied. A production version of the Volkswagen Up! prototype (shown here in three-door guise) will form the basis for the range, with both three and five-door versions expected at the beginning of 2011.

Slovakia will play host to construction, with VW looking to assemble the minicar range at its Bratislava plant. Professor Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, said:

"Our team at Volkswagen in Slovakia is ideally prepared to provide the flexibility required for the production of the New Small Family. Four brands are already produced successfully under one roof at our plant in Bratislava today."

The three-door Up! and five-door Space-Up! concepts have been with us since 2007, so VW should be well-acquainted with the platform by this stage. What remains to be seen though is whether the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout of the concept cars will make its way to production. Time will tell.
